“Diversity: the art of thinking independently together.”
-Malcolm Forbes
This Fourth of July I’m focusing on one of the aspects of America I appreciate most: diversity. There are many different types of people who make up our melting pot and we’re all better for it. So this year, while celebrating how varied my fellow citizens are, I’ve decided to take a look at how unique their outdoor spaces can be as well. Sure, it’s fantastic to honor the holiday with a big backyard barbecue, but even if you’re not partying in the sprawling countryside you can still commemorate this country. Here’s to wonderful, wide-ranging people and their wonderful, wide-ranging spaces!

If you live in the South where the temperatures can be really high, consider a porch party. Shade, cool drinks and great company are all you need to enjoy the holiday without working up a sweat.

If your home is a tiny retreat, it might be a good idea to host your guests at a nearby park or beach and to use your house as more of a home base. Now you can invite as many people as you want. Cook simple, easy food the night before and enjoy the day down the road.

If you’re having a patriotic party for two this year, you might think about an outdoor daybed. Somehow snoozing outside feels even more decadent than a regular old nap and there’s nothing better than stretching out and relaxing after a day of fun in the sun.

In condos, retirement communities and developments, conversation can be the key to a great Independence Day. Set up a space conducive to socializing and encourage your guests to flaunt their First Amendment. If it’s hot, be sure to serve plenty of water and to set up a patio umbrella as a cooling station for older guests.

City mice can party even from deep within their concrete jungles. In urban spaces, seating is the priority, followed by pops of greenery and color. Eighty-six any unnecessary pieces of furniture and decor in order to clear the way for many moving feet. You can always cook indoors and enjoy your food outside if a grill isn’t an option.

No matter where you are this Fourth of July, if you don’t have any outdoor space to call your own, you can always borrow some. There are hotels across this country with gorgeous patios, roof decks and gardens just waiting to be enjoyed. Call up a local spot to see if they’re offering any firework viewing parties and get out to enjoy some American air!
Happy Fourth of July everyone! Brought to you by Lowe’s.
